Opened on 12 October 2002, Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is a shimmering glass and steel structure along the magnificent Marina Bay waterfront. Designed by local firm DP Architects and Michael Wilford and Partners from the UK, Singapore’s national arts centre has irrevocably changed the city skyline, and is today a cultural and architectural icon. Its two domes house world-class performance spaces – its main venues are a 1,600-seat Concert Hall and a 2,000-seat Theatre. Esplanade’s distinctive roof cladding is made of glass and aluminium sunshades that let light in but screen out the sun. The centre houses other spaces such as smaller studios, a mall, an arts gallery and outdoor performing venues. It presents a host of programmes across all genres throughout the year, and has welcomed top artists from around the world.
